Cicerone guide COAST TO COAST WALK
|
This is the third edition of Cicerone's guide to the Coast to Coast trail popularised by Wainwright. The walk from St Bees Head in Cumbria to Robin Hood's Bay on Yorkshire's east coast is now one of the most popular long-distance walks in Britain. At 178 miles (300km) long, the trail can be easily walked within a two-week holiday period. The route is based on permitted rights of way and minimises the amount of road walking. The guide includes an accommodation listing. The guide is in three sections. The first gives the route description, from west to east, annotated as appropriate with notes of geological, historical, industrial, sociological and natural history interest. The second section gives the route description only in an east to west direction, cross-referenced to the points of interest. The final section comprises a description of variant routes and lists useful addresses.

Cicerone guide THE OFFA'S DYKE PATH
|
Offa's Dyke was constructed by the powerful King of Mercia in the late eighth century to mark out the western boundary of his kingdom. Hundreds of years later this is the inspiration for a 170-mile National Trail traversing the border country of England and Wales. The whole route is described, with suggestions for circular walks covering sections of it. Undertaken in its entirety the route offers an attractive and at times demanding two-week trek for the long-distance walker. The Offa's Dyke Path makes its way through varied, sometimes wild, often remote, and frequently superb scenery, linked by a succession of historic towns and attractive villages. The guide combines practical information and advice with a generous helping of historical and scenic detail of this highly attractive border region. Written with enthusiasm, this is an ideal guidebook for both the long-distance walkers and those making shorter excursions along Offa's Dyke Path.

Cicerone guide THE PENNINE WAY
|
This new full-colour guide to Britain's best-known and often challenging long-distance walk has all the essential information to help you plan and complete the trip. Whether the route is tackled in its entirety over two to three weeks or enjoyed in several short 'bites', this up-to-date guide gives you all the facts on terrain, mileage, maps, accommodation, transport, etc., as well as a comprehensive description of each section of the walk and its points of interest. A list of interconnecting trails makes it possible to devise any number of circular or linear walks using parts of the Pennine Way. The guide is illustrated throughout with the author's own photographs and sketchmaps. The Pennine Way begins, wholly appropriately, in the centre of England, historically the heartland of the country's outdoor movement. Ringed by motorways and the industrial conurbations of Sheffield, Derby, The Potteries, Manchester and Huddersfield, the 542 square miles (140,000 hectares) of the Peak District National Park contain some of the wildest and loveliest countryside in Britain. This guide has divided the Pennine Way into 16 stages, each ending at a place where accommodation is available.
The stages are mostly equivalent to a day's walking, though a few may seem rather on the short or long side. Heading each stage are useful statistics: the distance involved; the main ascents; places on or near the route where refreshments and provisions may be found; access to public transport, if any; types of accommodation on offer; and the OS maps (both Landranger and Outdoor Leisure) covering the stage.

Recreational path guide THE COAST TO COAST WALK
|
The Coast to Coast Walk is unique among Britain's long-distance footpaths in that it was the invention of one man, the legendary Alfred Wainwright, and enjoys no official status like, for example, the National trails in England and Wales. Nevertheless, it has become one of Britain's most popular long-distance walks, which is hardly surprising as it traverses some of the finest walking territory in the country. Starting at St Bees on the Cumbrian coast, the route runs for 192 miles (307 km) to Robin Hood's Bay on the North Sea and lies, for the most part, within the boundaries of three of Britain's loveliest National Parks - the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors. As well as the main route, there are also alternatives available at several points. Martin Wainwright's description of the route is divided into fifteen chapters, each covering one day's walk (though alternative stopping places are identified for those who wish to spread their journey over a longer period) and each section of the route is described in detail with accompanying Ordnance Survey 1:25 000 mapping and colour photographs.
There are also brief feature essays on features or places of particular historical or landscape interest and a Useful Information section at the end which gives details of organisations which provide advice or information on matters such as travel and accommodation.

Walkers guide HADRIAN'S COSTAL ROUTE
|
Hadrian's Wall, running from Wallsend to Bowness, is a much visited attraction and an iconic landmark with over 200 years of serious research behind it. The Western Frontier of the Wall has had barely 70, but through the efforts of a small band of archaeologists and the Hadrian's Wall Heritage Trust Ltd, this is gradually changing. The frontier route followed in this guide, running from Ravenglass to Bowness on Solway, is punctuated by Roman forts, the visible remains of a frontier of watchtowers, mileforts and manned bases. This fully illustrated guide, including the bright color section characteristic of the towpath guides, has information on the flora and fauna en route, places to stay, eat and drink, the local history of towns along the way and a number of maps.Structured in a clearly broken up manner so that what would be a ten-day continuous walk is in manageable daily/half-day chunks, this guide will be of interest to walkers, tourists, amateur historians and archaeologists and those interested in local history.
The author's depth of research means the guide offers a new route and does not adhere to the present Sustran's Hadrianic cycle way (route 72) or Cumbrian coastal way.

The NATIONAL TRAILS
|
National Trails were established as part of the post-war programme to keep areas of Britain "special" and to protect them from development. The first such route, the Pennine Way, opened in 1965, and since then another 14 have been designated in England and Wales, with a further 4 in Scotland. Together, the National Trails cover well over 5000 kilometres (3100 miles), each one with unique qualities which explore the rich, scenic and historic countryside of Britain. Even the most dedicated long-distance walker would take over 200 days to walk them all, but most are happy to explore them one after another over several annual holidays. With its route descriptions, photographs and profiles, this book is not only an invaluable reference for anyone researching our National Trails, but is in itself a celebration of these wonderful routes across Britain's landscape. Paddy Dillon has walked all the National Trails twice, and keeps abreast of all the latest developments.
